CHANDIGARH, March 27

Following a significant reduction in street-level drug availability due to an aggressive crackdown under the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign, launched on the orders of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab Police is now intensifying efforts to dismantle high-level drug networks. The focus has shifted to targeting major players—drug suppliers and kingpins—driving the narcotics trade across the state, announced Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav on Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference at Punjab Police Headquarters, accompanied by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Headquarters Dr. Sukhchain Singh Gill, DGP Yadav stated, “We’re not just stopping at street-level arrests. Our teams are thoroughly interrogating all apprehended drug peddlers and smugglers to uncover and identify the big fish in Punjab’s narcotics trade.”

This escalation follows the DGP’s directive to all Commissioners of Police (CPs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) to identify and document key drug suppliers and peddlers in their districts within a seven-day timeframe.

Launched on March 1, 2025, the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign has already yielded significant results. In just 27 days, Punjab Police arrested 4,142 drug smugglers, registered 2,384 First Information Reports (FIRs), and seized 146.3 kg of heroin, 85.3 kg of opium, 19.95 quintals of poppy husk, 7.69 lakh intoxicant tablets/capsules, 1 kg of ICE (methamphetamine), and ₹5.83 crore in drug proceeds.

DGP Yadav highlighted that the crackdown’s success in curbing street-level drug supply has paved the way for a deeper investigation into the supply chain’s masterminds. He noted that CPs and SSPs have been instructed to personally supervise a detailed mapping exercise, cataloguing suppliers based on interrogation findings, public tips, intelligence inputs, data from the Safe Punjab Helpline, and insights from investigations under the NDPS Act.

Mohalla Committees to Bolster Urban Anti-Drug Efforts

Taking inspiration from the effective Village Defence Committees (VDCs) in border regions, Punjab Police plans to establish Mohalla Committees in urban areas to strengthen its fight against drugs. Comprising trusted local figures, VDCs have served as the police’s eyes and ears in rural border villages, significantly aiding anti-drug efforts.

“Mohalla Committees will empower urban communities to collectively combat the drug menace, just as VDCs have enhanced rural policing in border areas,” said DGP Yadav, stressing the importance of citizen participation in eradicating drugs from Punjab.

Expressing gratitude to the public for their support, the DGP urged residents to continue aiding the police by anonymously reporting drug traffickers via the Safe Punjab Anti-Drug Helpline at 9779100200.
