Punjab Ramps Up Anti-Corruption Drive: 191 Police Clerks Transferred After Tehsildars, Says Harpal Cheema

“For three years, the AAP government has waged an unrelenting war on corruption. We will wipe it out from Punjab entirely,” declares Harpal Cheema.
“Born from an anti-corruption movement, the Aam Aadmi Party will not tolerate corruption under any circumstances,” Cheema asserts.
“No police clerk will stay at the same station beyond two years—long tenures breed corruption,” he adds.

Chandigarh, March 24

The Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has intensified its crackdown on corruption. Hot on the heels of widespread transfers of Tehsildars, the administration has now shifted 191 police clerks (munshis) across various police stations in the state.

Speaking to the press, Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema emphasized that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has been locked in a fierce battle against corruption for the past three years. Since assuming power, the government has taken decisive action against numerous corrupt officials and staff, with many facing imprisonment. Now, it is simultaneously tackling corruption, crime, and drug trafficking, yielding tangible results.

Cheema highlighted AAP’s roots, stating, “The Aam Aadmi Party emerged from an anti-corruption movement, and we stand firm on our zero-tolerance policy. Our mission is to completely eliminate corruption from Punjab.”

He added, “When our National Convener Arvind Kejriwal founded AAP, the fight against corruption was its core principle—a battle we treat as a mission. Wherever AAP governs, robust anti-corruption measures follow. The Punjab Government is living up to this commitment.”

Reflecting on recent actions, Cheema noted that complaints against certain Tehsildars, Patwaris, and revenue department officials prompted swift and strict responses across Punjab. “These efforts have brought relief to the people, and corruption is being uprooted daily,” he said.

He stressed that the campaign extends beyond revenue offices. “Whether it’s a Tehsil, a police station, or any government department, corruption is being stamped out, and those involved are facing consequences.”

Cheema pointed to a specific concern: police clerks stationed at the same posts for 15-20 years, raising corruption risks, while SHOs, DSPs, and senior officers are routinely transferred. To address this, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann introduced a landmark policy—no police clerk can remain at the same station for more than two years. Clerks exceeding this tenure are to be relocated immediately. Accordingly, 191 police clerks have been reassigned to new stations.

Looking ahead, Cheema vowed, “Wherever we detect even a hint of corruption, the Punjab Government will act decisively. It’s our duty to eradicate corruption, and we will see it through. The AAP Government is dedicated to delivering a corruption-free administration to Punjab’s people.”
