Punjab Set to Get Its First Ever Canal Post-Independence Under CM Mann’s Leadership: The Malwa Canal

Canal to be constructed at a cost of Rs 2300 crore to boost the state’s progress and prosperity

Around 150 kilometers long, the canal will meet the irrigation needs of over 2 lakh acres of land

Sri Muktsar Sahib, July 27

In a groundbreaking move, the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has initiated the construction of the Malwa Canal. This ambitious project is poised to irrigate approximately two lakh acres of land, heralding an era of unprecedented development and progress in the state.

During a recent visit to the district, Chief Minister Mann inspected the ongoing work on the Malwa Canal. This canal will originate from the Harike Headworks and run along the left side of the Rajasthan Feeder Canal, extending to near the village of Warring Khera. The canal, partly utilizing land previously acquired by the Rajasthan government for the Rajasthan Feeder, will supply additional water resources to areas on the left side of the Rajasthan Feeder Canal, which are inadequately served by the Sirhind Feeder Canal. The proposed discharge of this 149.53-kilometer-long canal is 2000 cusecs, with a construction cost estimated at Rs 2300 crore.

This initiative is particularly crucial during the Kharif season when the Ferozepur Feeder struggles to meet Punjab’s high water demand, thereby affecting the supply in the Sirhind Feeder. The resulting water scarcity forces Punjab to rotate its canal operations. Currently, 302 lift pumps are operating between RD 7100 to 430080 of the Sirhind Feeder, irrigating the left side of the Rajasthan Feeder, an area originally served by the Sirhind Canal system’s Abohar Branch Upper and Bathinda Branch, fed from Ropar Head Works.

Previously, instead of enhancing water supply to the tail portion of the Sirhind Canal system, the government opted to supply this area via lift pumps from the Sirhind Feeder. This decision led to a water shortage for the Abohar and Fazilka canal systems. As a long-term solution, the current government has decided to construct the Malwa Canal parallel to the existing Rajasthan Feeder and Sirhind Feeder. This new canal will ensure that more water is available for the Abohar area from the Sirhind Feeder, ensuring that regions such as Muktsar, Gidderbaha, Bathinda, Zira, Abohar, Ferozepur, and Fazilka receive their rightful share of water.
