In its ongoing drive to combat corruption, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested Field Kanungo Avtar Singh, stationed at Sub-Tehsil Sherpur in Sangrur district, on May 19, 2025. The official was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000, marking another success in the state’s crackdown on corrupt practices.

Details of the Case

According to an official spokesperson of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau, the arrest followed a complaint by a resident of village Malku Patti, Tehsil Dhuri, Sangrur. The complainant reported that he had applied for the division of his family’s agricultural land among legal heirs. He alleged that Avtar Singh had already extorted Rs 18,000 as a bribe and was demanding an additional Rs 25,000 to process the application.

Coordinated Trap and Arrest

Following a preliminary inquiry into the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau set up a sting operation. The VB team apprehended Avtar Singh while he was accepting the Rs 25,000 bribe from the complainant, with the transaction witnessed by two official witnesses. The arrest underscores the VB’s commitment to rooting out corruption at all levels of administration.

Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation

A case has been registered against Avtar Singh under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB Police Station, Patiala Range. He is scheduled to be produced before a competent court on May 20, 2025. The spokesperson added that further investigations are underway to uncover any additional instances of misconduct or involvement of other individuals.
