- Punjab Chief Minister Also Barred from Attending Paris Event to Conceal Discrimination in Sports Funding
Chandigarh, August 3
Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has strongly criticized the Union Government’s decision to exclude speakers from non-BJP ruled states, including Punjab, from attending the National Legislature Conference in the United States.
Calling the decision unfortunate, Sandhwan accused the BJP of engaging in petty politics that undermine the federal structure of the nation and hinder the welfare and progress of states and the country. He noted that the conference was an opportunity for over 3,000 legislators to share their visions, but the Union Government’s move deprived speakers from non-BJP ruled states of this chance.

Sandhwan pointed out that speakers from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala were not allowed to attend the conference in America. He emphasized that the nation’s strength lies in fair political practices, warning that the BJP’s actions deliberately weaken the federal fabric of India. He stressed that the Speaker represents the dignity and freedom of the House, and accused the BJP of pursuing a divisive agenda detrimental to the country.
Additionally, Sandhwan criticized the denial of permission for Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to travel to Paris, expressing anger over what he described as repeated, unjustified roadblocks. He accused the central government of neglecting sports development in Punjab while favoring other states, calling for a fair sports policy that acknowledges the capabilities of athletes from all regions.

Sandhwan highlighted Punjab’s significant contribution to India’s national sport, hockey, referencing the team’s historic victory over Australia after 52 years. He revealed that the Chief Minister’s request to attend an event in Paris to support the team was denied, suggesting that the BJP is attempting to conceal its failure to allocate adequate sports funding to Punjab. Sandhwan perceived this as a deliberate attempt to discriminate against and marginalize the state of Punjab.
