Punjab Welcomes Alberta: Historic Talks Spark New Era of Innovation & Investment

Punjab Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema hosted a high-level delegation from Alberta, Canada, at Punjab Bhawan in Chandigarh on February 5, 2026, to bolster economic ties between Punjab and Alberta.

The meeting, arranged at the request of the High Commission of Canada in New Delhi, centered on expanding cooperation in investment, technology, innovation, and sustainable development.

Led by Alberta’s Minister of Indigenous Relations, Rajan Sawhney, the delegation included Stakeholders Administrator Jatinder Singh Tatla from the Office of the Premier, Senior Advisor Happy Mann to the Leader of the United Conservative Party of Alberta, Executive Director Genevieve Turcotte from the Department of Indigenous Relations, along with Jagroop Khalon, Jaswinder Grewal, and Puneet Kumar Goyal.

Invest Punjab officials delivered a detailed presentation, featuring a video and PowerPoint showcase of the state’s industrial strengths, investment prospects, and the Punjab government’s initiatives to foster a business-friendly environment with streamlined Ease of Doing Business processes.

Minister Sawhney expressed keen interest in Invest Punjab’s operational model and praised the Punjab government’s proactive stance on industrial promotion. She noted that the Punjab visit is part of a wider India mission tied to India Energy Week, involving engagements with government and private sector leaders to identify collaboration opportunities. She highlighted technology and innovation as prime areas where Alberta and Punjab can leverage complementary strengths for shared growth.

Finance Minister Cheema emphasized Punjab’s eagerness for enduring international partnerships that prioritize sustainable development and mutual prosperity beyond mere trade. “Punjab welcomes innovation-focused collaborations that deliver value to both sides and fortify economic bonds,” he said.

The session included senior Punjab officials such as Milkfed Chairman Narinder Singh Shergill, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) Alok Shekhar, Secretary (Industries) Mohinder Pal, Additional CEO of Invest Punjab Rubinderjit Singh Brar, and Special Secretary (Power) Dr. Syed Sehrish Asgar.

Both sides conveyed a strong commitment to nurturing a reliable economic corridor grounded in cooperation, innovation, and trust between Alberta and Punjab. This engagement signals promising prospects for deeper bilateral linkages in key sectors.
