Punjabi University Study Highlights Need for Space Law Overhaul
A recent study conducted by Punjabi University has underscored the urgent need to revise international space laws to address modern scientific and technological advancements. Led by Dr. Harmandeep Kaur under the supervision of Professor Dr. Gurpreet Kaur Pannu, the research emphasizes two critical issues: defining a legal boundary between airspace and outer space and tackling the growing problem of space debris pollution.

The study argues that the current international legal framework governing space is outdated, failing to keep pace with rapid developments in space exploration and technology. Dr. Harmandeep Kaur highlighted the necessity of establishing clear jurisdictional boundaries to regulate activities in outer space effectively. Additionally, the research calls for global cooperation to mitigate the environmental impact of space debris, which poses a significant threat to satellites and future space missions.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jagdeep Singh praised the study, noting, “The beauty of Punjabi University’s research lies in its vast scope, addressing critical global challenges like space governance. Our work reflects a commitment to advancing knowledge for the betterment of humanity.” The findings aim to spark discussions among policymakers and international bodies to modernize space regulations.

Court Orders Halt to Demonstrations at Punjabi University
In a separate development, Punjabi University authorities announced that the Honorable Court issued an order on June 21, 2025, prohibiting any protests, gatherings, meetings, demonstrations, or gheraos within a 300-meter radius of the university’s outer boundary wall. This directive directly addresses the ongoing dharna by contract teachers on campus, which has persisted for several days.
The university administration clarified that, as per the court’s ruling, staging a dharna inside the campus is explicitly banned, and employees must not disrupt university operations. Authorities urged the protesting teachers to immediately end their demonstration, warning that non-compliance would be treated as contempt of court, potentially leading to serious legal consequences.
The court’s order aims to ensure the smooth functioning of Punjabi University and maintain a conducive academic environment. The administration emphasized its commitment to adhering to the judicial directive while addressing the concerns of contract teachers through appropriate channels.
