RGNUL Faculty and Scholars Present Research at ILO’s Regulating for Decent Work Conference in Geneva

A team from Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab, comprising Prof. (Dr.) Sharanjit, Vandana Sharma, and Shivika Goyal, co-authored and presented research papers at the 9th Regulating for Decent Work (RDW) Conference, organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

Conference Overview

The biennial RDW Conference is one of the ILO’s premier global academic platforms, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue among researchers, policymakers, and practitioners on labour regulation, institutional reform, and social justice.

  1. Futuristic Approaches to Prison Labour in India: Paving the Way for Rehabilitation and Right to Decent Work Post Release

    • Presenter: Prof. (Dr.) Sharanjit, Professor of Law, RGNUL

    • Details: The paper analyzed challenges in India’s prison labour system and proposed a rehabilitative, rights-based framework aligned with international standards, including the Nelson Mandela Rules and ILO conventions. It emphasized post-release integration and decent work opportunities for former inmates.

  2. Empowering the Invisible Workforce: The Role of Labour Institutions in Advancing Decent Work for ASHA Workers in India

    • Presenter: Vandana Sharma, Junior Research Fellow and PhD scholar, RGNUL

    • Details: Based on extensive fieldwork in Punjab, the paper highlighted systemic gaps in labour protections for ASHA workers and recommended institutional reforms to align with the ILO’s decent work framework. Vandana received a fully funded RDW Fellowship to attend the conference.

Contributions

While Shivika Goyal, a PhD scholar at RGNUL, could not attend in person, her contributions were integral to both papers, enriching the research with her insights.
