The demand for knee replacement surgeries in India is rising steadily, with over 2.5 million people undergoing the procedure annually, according to available data. These surgeries often involve replacing damaged joint surfaces with metal implants to restore mobility and alleviate pain.
Addressing a press conference at Park Hospital, Patiala, on Sunday, Dr. Bhanu Pratap Singh Saluja, a renowned orthopedic and robotic joint replacement surgeon, highlighted the transformative advancements in knee replacement surgery. “Fifteen years ago, knee replacement was a major procedure, requiring patients to stay in the hospital for three to four weeks. However, with technological advancements, robotic knee replacement surgery can now be completed in just 12-15 minutes,” Dr. Saluja explained. He noted that the procedure eliminates the need for blood transfusions, stitches, or staples, and is performed through a small incision. Remarkably, patients can walk within four hours post-surgery.
