Supreme Court Dismisses PIL Seeking Reintroduction of Paper Ballots

Chandigarh, November 26
The Supreme Court has dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Dr. K.A. Paul, seeking the reintroduction of paper ballot voting in India. The court rejected the plea, citing the lack of merit in the arguments presented by the petitioner.
Dr. Paul, who appeared as the petitioner, argued that paper ballots would ensure transparency and reduce electoral fraud. However, the court questioned the basis of his claims and pointed out the absence of evidence to support his allegations of widespread electoral malpractice.

The court also highlighted the practical challenges and potential logistical issues associated with reintroducing paper ballots in a country as large and diverse as India. It emphasized the efficiency and transparency of the current electronic voting machine (EVM) system.
With this dismissal, the current electoral system, which relies on EVMs, remains unchanged.
