Chandigarh, March 5
In its ongoing crackdown against corruption, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has successfully apprehended Vipan Kumar, a Patwari posted at Revenue Halqa Nawanshahr-1, who had been evading arrest for three weeks in connection with a bribery case. His accomplice, Rampal, was earlier caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000 on behalf of the Patwari.
A spokesperson for the VB revealed that the case was initiated following a complaint from a resident of New Abadi, Nawanshahr, in SBS Nagar district. The complainant alleged that Patwari Vipan Kumar had demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 to process the mutation of his ancestral property. The complainant had already paid Rs 2,000 in advance to Rampal, a middleman acting on the Patwari’s instructions. When pressured for the remaining amount, the complainant approached the VB for assistance.

Following a preliminary investigation, the VB set up a trap on February 14, 2025, and successfully caught Rampal red-handed while he was accepting Rs 3,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses. However, Patwari Vipan Kumar managed to escape during the operation. Since then, the VB had been conducting raids at his residence and other suspected locations, ultimately leading to his arrest.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against both accused at the VB Police Station in Jalandhar Range. The court has granted a one-day police remand for the accused, and further investigations into the case are currently underway.
This arrest marks another significant step in the Punjab Vigilance Bureau’s relentless efforts to eradicate corruption and ensure accountability among public officials.
