Waste Management and Sewage Treatment Must Be Top Priority, Says Kapurthala MLA

Rana Gurjeet Singh Advocates Infrastructure Development Over Penalties

Kapurthala, August 24

In response to the recent imposition of a Rs. 1000 crore penalty on the Punjab government by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for non-compliance with environmental laws, Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh emphasized the urgent need for improved waste management and sewage treatment in the state. He called on commissioners and executive officers of municipal corporations and councils to prioritize these areas to avoid further penalties and environmental degradation.

The MLA urged the establishment of a comprehensive protocol for solid waste management and sewage treatment across cities and towns in Punjab, advocating for the adoption of mechanized systems to enhance efficiency.

“To start, the Department of Local Government should initiate neighborhood-level cleaning of sewage lines to ensure cleanliness and prevent overflow,” he suggested.

Rana Gurjeet Singh highlighted the growing problem of waste management in urban areas, noting that it has escalated into a significant public health concern. He expressed disappointment that, despite his repeated efforts, waste management in his constituency of Kapurthala remains inadequate.

He also lamented the fact that this is the second time in three years that Punjab has faced penalties from the NGT for failing to meet environmental standards. The MLA pointed out that the rising population in Punjab’s cities has increased the burden on municipal waste systems, leading to inefficiencies in effluent treatment plants and the discharge of untreated sewage into water bodies.

“Instead of paying hefty fines, the government should focus on making capital investments in sewage treatment and waste management,” Rana Gurjeet Singh stated, urging a complete overhaul of the sewage and waste collection systems in the state.
