21st December 2024 Declared as ‘Close Day’ to Facilitate Voting in Local Body Elections

Chandigarh, 19 December 2024:

To ensure that voters can actively participate in the upcoming General and Bye-elections for 5 Municipal Corporations, 41 Municipal Councils, and other ward-wise elections, the Punjab State Election Commission has made the following announcements:

  1. Public Holiday in Government Offices:
    21st December 2024 (Saturday) has been declared a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, in all Punjab Government offices located within the jurisdiction of Municipal Bodies where elections will take place.
  2. Special Leave for Voters:
    Government employees and workers residing in Municipal Body areas where elections are being held but employed elsewhere will be granted special leave to cast their vote as per rules.
  3. School Closures:
    Schools whose buildings are being utilized as polling stations will remain closed on 21st December 2024.
  4. Close Day for Shops and Factories:
    To enable workers in shops, factories, and commercial establishments to cast their vote, the day has been declared a ‘Close Day’ under the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958, and the Factories Act, 1948, within the jurisdiction of the Municipal Bodies holding elections.
  5. Dry Day Announcement:
    21st December 2024 will also be observed as a “Dry Day” in the revenue jurisdictions of the Municipal Bodies conducting elections.
  6. University Examinations Postponed:
    Guru Nanak Dev University (Amritsar), Punjabi University (Patiala), and Panjab University (Chandigarh) have postponed all annual and semester exams scheduled for 21st December 2024. Students are advised to check their respective university websites for the updated examination schedules.

Encouragement to Voters:
The Punjab State Election Commission has taken comprehensive measures to ensure free and fair elections. All eligible voters whose names appear on the electoral rolls are urged to exercise their franchise and contribute to the democratic process.
