44,920 km of Roads to Transform Punjab’s Infrastructure, CM Mann Unveils ₹16,209 Cr Road Development Initiative

Biggest road infrastructure push in state history | No central flood relief yet | 900 new buses soon

Chandigarh, 29 November

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today announced Punjab’s most ambitious road-building programme ever — construction and upgradation of 44,920 km of roads across villages, towns and cities at a cost of ₹16,209 crore, to be completed by December 2026.

All new roads will come with a mandatory 5-year maintenance clause and world-class safety features including luminous markings, proper signage and crash barriers.

Already, work on 19,373 km of rural link roads worth ₹4,092 crore is underway. After this year’s devastating floods damaged thousands of kilometres of roads, the government conducted a statewide survey involving PWD, Mandi Board, Urban Local Bodies and public representatives to identify roads needing repair, widening or complete rebuilding.

Zero help from Centre CM Mann revealed that despite repeated requests, Punjab has received not a single rupee from the Centre either as Rural Development Fund (RDF) or as special flood-relief package. “All these historic roads are being built with Punjab’s own money,” he said, adding that the Chief Minister’s Flying Squad is actively monitoring quality and several contracts have already been terminated for substandard work.

900 new government buses soon Responding to the ongoing PRTC-Pepsu employees’ strike, the CM appealed to workers to resume duties and assured that the government is sympathetically addressing their genuine demands, including pending court cases. He announced that 900 brand-new government buses will soon be added to the fleet to improve public transport.

Strong warning to gangsters Reiterating zero tolerance towards anti-social elements, Mann warned gangsters that anyone disturbing Punjab’s peace will face severe consequences.

Hits back at Haryana CM Dismissing allegations of politicising his condolence visit to the family of deceased basketball player Hardik Rathi, the CM said: “I went as a sports lover to share their grief. Haryana is trying to hide its own collapsed sports infrastructure behind these accusations. While India prepares for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, two promising Haryana players have died recently because of poor facilities. Instead of blame games, the Haryana government should accept responsibility.”

The CM also made an early-morning surprise visit to Kurali bus stand today to personally assess commuter issues and directed the Rupnagar DC to immediately increase bus routes and frequency.
