The Punjab Department of Excise and Taxation has detained 170 vehicles suspected of transporting goods in violation of GST provisions during a major enforcement drive across the state.
The operation was jointly conducted by all State Investigation and Preventive Units, with special focus on the industrial hubs of Mandi Gobindgarh and Khanna. During the drive, iron scrap and finished iron and steel goods worth more than ₹5 crore were seized for further verification.
Punjab Finance, Excise and Taxation Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema said the action sends a strong message to those attempting to evade tax laws.

“Those who think they can bypass the rules and get away with it must understand that the government is determined to close every loophole. Tax compliance must become the norm, not the exception,” Cheema said.
He added that vehicles carrying undocumented goods would face strict action under the law.
According to the minister, a substantial number of detained vehicles were found without proper invoices and other prescribed documents, amounting to clear violations of GST provisions.
“Punjab will not allow tax evasion to undermine the state’s revenue. Every legitimate rupee must reach the public exchequer, as it is essential for development and public welfare,” he said.
Cheema further informed that the detained consignments are undergoing detailed verification, which is expected to be completed within a week. Following the verification, appropriate action will be taken, including the assessment and recovery of applicable taxes and statutory dues.
Emphasising that the operation is part of the department’s continuing efforts to strengthen tax compliance and curb the movement of undocumented goods, the minister said the government’s campaign would continue across Punjab.
“This is not a one-time exercise but a sustained campaign to bring discipline to trade practices. The message is clear: follow the rules or face the consequences,” Cheema said.
