Punjab Government Boosts Principal Promotion Quota to 75%

AAP Restores Educators’ Rights, Reversing Congress’ Cuts, to Strengthen School Leadership: Harjot Bains

Chandigarh, April 15, 2025

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government in Punjab has raised the promotion quota for school principals to 75%, enabling the appointment of 500 new principals to enhance leadership and education quality in government schools.

Previously, the Congress government slashed the promotion quota to 50% in 2018, causing a severe shortage of principals, blocking deserving teachers’ career paths, and leaving schools leaderless amid recruitment delays and legal disputes.

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains criticized the Congress’ decision, saying, “Their unfair policy stripped teachers of rightful promotions and created a backlog of vacancies trapped in legal battles.” He emphasized that restoring the 75% quota will empower senior educators to lead, stating, “This move ensures 500 new principals will drive excellence in our schools while reclaiming educators’ rights.”

Bains reaffirmed AAP’s commitment to transforming Punjab’s education system by prioritizing teacher empowerment and student learning, marking this as a pivotal step toward addressing longstanding educational challenges.
