-475 Warders and 57 Matrons to be Recruited
-Recruitment Process to Proceed Parallel to Ongoing Selection
Chandigarh, December 24
Punjab Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema on Wednesday granted formal approval for the direct recruitment of 532 personnel in the Punjab Prisons Department to enhance jail security and boost administrative efficiency. The drive includes 475 Warders and 57 Matrons, filling critical vacancies that have remained unfilled for over a year.
Emphasising that these 532 posts will be filled through the Subordinate Services Selection (SSS) Board, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated that this recruitment will run concurrently with the ongoing process for 451 Warders and 20 Matrons already being handled by the board. He added that the approval also accounts for seven additional Warder posts likely to fall vacant due to retirements by December 31, 2026.

While the overall restructuring of the Prisons Department is still in progress, the Finance Minister stressed the urgent need to fill these 532 posts to maintain operational effectiveness. He noted that the department has been facing a severe staff shortage, forcing guarding personnel to work double shifts.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab Government to ensure well-staffed correctional facilities and provide regular employment opportunities to the state’s youth, the Finance Minister said this recruitment will ease the workload on existing staff and replace temporary employees with permanent appointments.
