Sitaram Yechury became the General Secretary of CPI(M) in 2015, succeeding Prakash Karat. He began his political career under the mentorship of CPI(M) stalwart Harkishan Singh Surjeet. Yechury joined the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in 1974 and became a party member the following year. During the Emergency, he was arrested and spent several months in prison.

Harkishan Singh Surjeet had played a key role in the coalition governments of V.P. Singh’s National Front and the United Front in 1996-97, both of which were supported by CPI(M) from the outside. Yechury honed his political skills during this period, particularly when the Left parties supported the first UPA government, often pressuring Congress on policy-making.
