New Delhi/Chandigarh, September 27

Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Finnish Ambassador in New Delhi on Friday. The agreement aims to provide international-level training to government primary school teachers in Punjab. Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia accompanied Bains.

Speaking at the event, Bains expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. “I am thrilled to announce this MoU with Finland,” he said. “It will not only elevate primary education in Punjab but also strengthen cultural ties between India and Finland.”

Following Delhi’s example, Punjab became the second Indian state to establish such an agreement for teacher training in Finland.

Bains elaborated on the details of the agreement. Punjab’s primary school teachers will receive advanced training at the University of Turku in Finland. He mentioned that while five Finnish universities expressed interest, Turku was ultimately chosen for its expertise.

The Education Minister praised Finland’s global reputation in early childhood education. He highlighted Finland’s innovative approach that emphasizes play, exploration, and experiential learning. Bains emphasized that Finland prioritizes early childhood education and care as a foundation for lifelong learning and development.

He also highlighted the Punjab government’s efforts to enhance teacher skills under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. Since February 2023, 202 principals and education administrators have undergone training in Singapore. Additionally, 102 headmasters have completed courses at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad.

Teachers interested in the Finnish training program can apply through the designated website until September 27, 2024.
