Bangladesh Triumphs Over Scotland in T20 World Cup Opener

Patiala, 03 October (Sports Desk)

Nigar Sultana Joty’s Bangladesh defeated Kathryn Bryce’s Scotland in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 opener in Sharjah.

The victory for the tournament hosts marked their first win at a Women’s T20 World Cup since 2014, setting the stage for a promising Group B campaign. Despite Sarah Bryce’s excellent 49* from 52, Scotland fell short in their tournament debut due to a lack of support from their batting lineup.

Bangladesh Bowlers Deny Scotland

The Tigeresses consistently targeted the Scotland top order, defending their total of 119/7. Fahima Khatun’s early wicket of Saskia Horley and Marufa Akter’s dismissal of Kathryn Bruce in the powerplay put Scotland on the back foot.

Scotland’s Struggles

Although Scotland managed to build a partnership, wickets continued to fall as they struggled to accelerate their scoring rate. Despite Sarah Bryce’s efforts, the lower order failed to contribute significantly, and they ultimately finished 16 runs short of the target.

Bangladesh’s Solid Foundation

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first. Shathi Rani and Murshida Khatun provided a solid start, but disciplined bowling from Scotland kept their scoring in check. However, a mistimed shot from Khatun led to her dismissal in the fifth over.

Sobhana Mostary and captain Nigar Sultana continued to build the innings, but breakthroughs from Olivia Bell and Saskia Horley slowed down Bangladesh’s momentum. Fahima Khatun’s attacking cameo in the death overs helped Bangladesh reach a competitive total of 119/7.

Horley’s impressive bowling performance, including a career-best 3/13, contributed to Scotland’s strong showing, but it wasn’t enough to secure a victory in their first-ever World Cup match.
