Four Young Stars in Contention for ICC Women’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year

The ICC has unveiled the shortlist for the Women’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2024 award, featuring four talented players from South Africa, Scotland, India, and Ireland who have made significant strides in the past year.

The nominees are:

  • Annerie Dercksen (South Africa): An emerging all-rounder who played a key role in South Africa’s journey to the T20 World Cup final.
  • Saskia Horley (Scotland): A rising star who made history by becoming the first Scottish woman to score an ODI century.
  • Shreyanka Patil (India): A consistent performer for India across both white-ball formats, showcasing her versatility as a bowler.
  • Freya Sargent (Ireland): A young and promising bowler who has quickly become a key player for Ireland.

Here’s a closer look at their standout performances:

Annerie Dercksen (South Africa):

  • Statistics: 161 runs and 5 wickets in 17 T20Is; 60 runs in 2 Tests; 70 runs and 6 wickets in 4 ODIs.
  • Key Achievements: Played a crucial role in South Africa’s T20 World Cup campaign. Scored 69 runs in three T20Is against England. Contributed a composed 27 runs in South Africa’s only ODI win against England.
  • Memorable Performance: Unbeaten 44 off 23 balls against Pakistan in the T20I series decider, guiding South Africa to victory and earning Player of the Match.  

Saskia Horley (Scotland):

  • Statistics: 142 runs and 3 wickets in 10 T20Is; 276 runs and 9 wickets in 5 ODIs.
  • Key Achievements: Became the first Scottish woman to score an ODI century. Performed well in the ODI tri-series against the Netherlands and PNG. Took three wickets in Scotland’s opening match of the Women’s T20 World Cup against Bangladesh.
  • Memorable Performance: Scored 100 off 121 balls and took 4/24 against PNG in the ODI tri-series in the Netherlands.  

Shreyanka Patil (India):

  • Statistics: 15 wickets in 13 T20Is; 4 wickets in 2 ODIs.
  • Key Achievements: Consistent performer for India in both T20Is and ODIs. Played in bilateral series against Australia, Bangladesh, and South Africa, as well as the T20 Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup.
  • Memorable Performance: Took 2/14 against Pakistan in a crucial T20 World Cup match, helping restrict them to 105/8 and paving the way for India’s victory.

Freya Sargent (Ireland):

  • Statistics: 13 wickets in 11 ODIs; 7 wickets in 9 T20Is.
  • Key Achievements: Became a key player for Ireland at just 18 years old. Recorded career-best ODI figures of 3/29 against Zimbabwe. Performed well in challenging bilateral series against Sri Lanka, England, and Bangladesh.
  • Memorable Performance: Took 3/30 in the first T20I against England, including key wickets in the 19th over.
