
Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema Lays Foundation Stone Accompanied by Families of Padma Shri Kaur Singh and Renowned Kabaddi Player Gurmail Singh
Chandigarh/Dirba/Sangrur, January 25:
Punjab Finance, Planning, Program Implementation, Taxation, and Excise Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema inaugurated the construction work for a multi-purpose indoor sports stadium in Dirba today.
The minister announced that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab government is actively promoting sports culture across the state. As part of this initiative, the foundation stone for the stadium—set to be built at a cost of ₹7.20 crore—was laid. The facility will serve as a platform for talented athletes in the Dirba region to develop their skills and compete at national and international levels.

The foundation stone was laid at the Shaheed Bachan Singh Memorial Sports Stadium in the presence of Mrs. Ranjit Kaur, wife of legendary boxer Padma Shri Kaur Singh, and Mrs. Paramjit Kaur, wife of the late renowned Kabaddi player Gurmail Singh. Minister Cheema highlighted that this long-awaited demand of sports enthusiasts will soon be realized, providing opportunities for players to excel in 11 sports disciplines, including Kabaddi, Boxing, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Judo, Gymnastics, and Wrestling.

Minister Harpal Singh Cheema emphasized that the indoor stadium would be dedicated to Padma Shri Kaur Singh and Gurmail Singh as a tribute to their remarkable achievements in sports.
Deputy Commissioner of Sangrur, Sandeep Rishi, remarked that the stadium would be a boon for local athletes, fostering sports development in the region. He also praised Minister Harpal Singh Cheema’s efforts in advancing Dirba’s development and lauded the initiative to honor legendary sports personalities.
The event was attended by SDM Rajesh Sharma, Municipal Council President Maninder Singh Ghuman, OSD to Cabinet Minister Tapinder Singh Sohi, District Sports Officer Navdeep Singh, XEN PWD Ajay Garg, and other dignitaries.
