Vigilance Bureau Arrests Retired Cop for Accepting Bribe

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested a retired Head Constable (HC) Balwinder Singh for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000. The arrest comes after a complaint was lodged by Sukhvir Singh, a resident of Mohan Majra village, alleging that Balwinder Singh, who was illegally deployed at the Machhiwara police station, demanded a bribe for the release of his impounded car.

Modus Operandi:

  • The complainant approached the VB, stating that Balwinder Singh, an accomplice of the Station House Officer (SHO) of Machhiwara police station, demanded a bribe of Rs 25,000 for the release of his impounded vehicle.
  • After negotiations, the bribe amount was settled at Rs 10,000.
  • The complainant recorded the conversation with Balwinder Singh and submitted it as evidence to the VB.
  • A VB team laid a trap and caught Balwinder Singh red-handed while accepting the bribe outside the Machhiwara police station.

Illegal Deployment:

Investigations revealed that Balwinder Singh, despite being retired from the Punjab Armed Police (PAP), was illegally deployed at the police station by the SHO without any official orders. The role of the SHO and the MHC is also being investigated.

Legal Action:

A case has been registered against Balwinder Singh under Section 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 318 of the Indian Penal Code. He will be produced in court.
