National Games 2025: Anish Bhanwala Clinches Pistol Gold, Narmada Raju Sets New National Record

Anish Bhanwala wins gold in men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event; Narmada Raju sets a new national record in women’s 10m air rifle, just shy of the world record.

Dehradun, January 31 (Sports Desk)

Paris 2024 Olympian Anish Bhanwala secured the gold medal in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event at the National Games 2025 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on Thursday.

The Commonwealth Games 2018 gold medallist registered 31 hits in the final at the Trishool Shooting Range, finishing three hits ahead of silver medallist Gurpreet Singh. Vijayveer Sidhu took home the bronze with 26 hits.

Meanwhile, Narmada Nithin Raju delivered a record-breaking performance in the women’s 10m air rifle event, winning gold with a stunning score of 254.4, setting a new national record. Her score was just 0.1 points short of the world record (254.5) held by China’s Huang Yuting, achieved at the ISSF World Cup Final in New Delhi last year.

The previous Indian national record in the event belonged to Olympian Apurvi Chandela, who scored 252.9 at the 2019 World Cup in New Delhi.

In the 10m air rifle women’s final, Arya Borse (252.5) secured the silver medal, while Ramita Jindal (230.4) finished third with bronze. Olympian Elavenil Valarivan placed fifth in the event.

Rudrankksh Patil, a gold medallist in both the World Championships and ISSF World Cup, also competed on Thursday. He made it to the men’s 10m air rifle final with a qualifying score of 633.8. Patil had previously won gold in the 10m air rifle mixed team event alongside Narmada Nithin Raju at the 2023 Cairo World Cup.

In weightlifting, Vijay Kumar equaled the national record in the 55kg category, lifting 143kg in the clean and jerk to secure gold. His total lift of 248kg earned him the top podium spot.

The National Games 2025, which began on January 28, will continue until February 14.
