The Punjab government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Forest and Wildlife Preservation Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak, is dedicated to preserving and nurturing the state’s wildlife. Several initiatives have been implemented at the Chhatbir Zoo, making it a popular destination for visitors.
The zoo’s biggest and longest walk-in aviary in the country has become a major attraction, along with a newly established, ultra-modern dinosaur park. In the approximately 1200-meter wildlife safari area, the boundary wall has been reinforced, and a 260 KV capacity solar plant has been installed.
A critical care unit has been built at the lion safari for carnivorous animals, and an open-air zoo education plaza has been created to assist visitors, particularly schoolchildren.

Furthermore, the Indus river dolphin, Punjab’s state aquatic animal, is being protected, and 13 wildlife sanctuaries have been declared plastic-free. Five of Punjab’s wetlands—Harike, Ropar, Kanjhli, Keshopur, and Nangal—have been prioritized for development by the Union Government, being among 100 wetlands selected nationwide.
