Teenage tennis prodigy Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi’s impressive run at the Mumbai Open 2025 came to an end in the semi-finals against fifth-seeded Jil Teichmann of Switzerland. The 15-year-old, ranked in the top 60 juniors and training at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy, fell to Teichmann (world No. 117) 6-3, 6-1 at the Cricket Club of India on Saturday.
Despite the loss, Rajeshwaran’s semi-final appearance guarantees her a WTA ranking in the coming weeks, making her the youngest Indian player to achieve this milestone. She is also the first player born in or after 2009 to reach the top four of a WTA 125 tournament globally.
Rajeshwaran’s journey to the semi-finals began with a wildcard entry into the tournament. She won her qualifying match against world No. 264 Nicole Fossa Huergo of Italy (6-3, 3-6, 6-0) and then defeated the USA’s Jessica Failla (world No. 434) 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 to reach the main draw. She continued her winning streak by beating world No. 225 Iryna Shymanovich (6-4, 6-1) and then advanced after Zarina Diyas (world No. 353 and former top 50 player) withdrew midway through their match (Rajeshwaran leading 6-3, 3-2). In the quarter-finals, she defeated Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi (world No. 285) 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

The Mumbai Open, the largest professional women’s tennis tournament in India, returned in 2024 after a six-year hiatus. The 2025 edition is the fourth iteration of the tournament. 2024 Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka won the Mumbai Open title in 2017 as a teenager.
