Patiala, 11 February (Desk)

The play “Behrupiya,” presented by Theatre Depot, Chandigarh, was staged on February 10, 2025, the concluding day of a two-day drama festival organized by the North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala, Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The performance took place at the Kalidas Auditorium in Patiala and was directed by Niresh Kumar.

“Behrupiya” tells the story of Shankar, a skilled impersonator and actor who lives his roles both on and off stage. The play’s central conflict arises when Shankar, disguised as a saint, rejects a large sum of money from the corrupt Seth Thaggu Mal. This act of integrity brings him fame and an invitation to the king’s court, raising the question of whether he is simply an entertainer or if his art reflects a deeper truth.

The play, rich with music, dialogue, and drama, explores the artist’s struggle, societal perceptions, and the blurring lines between illusion and reality.
