Chandigarh, February 28:
In a significant move to promote reading habits among students in government schools, the Punjab Government has released a grant of ₹15 crore for the purchase of books for school libraries. This initiative aims to enhance students’ knowledge and contribute to their holistic development.
Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains shared the details, stating that the funds have been allocated as follows: ₹5,000 for each primary school, ₹13,000 for each middle school, and ₹15,000 for each high and senior secondary school.
To ensure the selection of high-quality and diverse reading materials, a state-level committee of experts has been formed. This committee will curate a list of books that align with the educational and intellectual growth of students.

Minister Bains emphasized the importance of cultivating a reading culture among students. “My goal is to make Punjab a leader in the education system across the country. I am personally visiting schools, gathering feedback from students and teachers, and using that information to shape future policies,” he said. He also urged teachers to motivate students to read extensively, especially after their final examinations, highlighting the value of books in gaining knowledge about literature, society, heritage, culture, and the world.
The initiative is part of the Punjab Government’s broader efforts to modernize school libraries and elevate the state’s education system to global standards, as envisioned by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
