Patiala, 04 March (Shahi)

Indian cricket sensation Rishabh Pant has been named a nominee for the prestigious Laureus Comeback of the Year 2025 Award, a testament to his extraordinary recovery and return to the sport after a life-threatening car accident. Surviving a near-fatal crash in December 2022, Pant made a triumphant comeback nearly two years later, playing a pivotal role in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory.

Laureus Awards: A Legacy of Excellence

Since its inception in 2000, the Laureus World Sports Awards have celebrated the pinnacle of athletic achievement across various categories. The Comeback of the Year Award honors an individual or team that has defied adversity—be it injury, illness, or personal setbacks—to reclaim glory on the global stage. Last year’s recipient, Olympic gymnastics icon Simone Biles, set the bar high with her triumphant return in 2024.

Pant’s Miraculous Comeback

In December 2022, Pant’s world turned upside down when his car crashed and burst into flames. Suffering severe injuries to his head, back, and feet—including a potentially career-ending right knee injury—he narrowly escaped losing a leg. “I thought my time here was over,” Pant later recalled, reflecting on the harrowing moment he was pulled from the wreckage.

Multiple surgeries and an arduous rehabilitation process followed, testing his physical and mental resilience. Yet, after 629 days away from competitive cricket, Pant returned in 2024 with unrelenting determination. His comeback Test match against Bangladesh saw him smash a match-defining century, matching MS Dhoni’s record for the most Test hundreds by an Indian wicketkeeper. Months later, he contributed significantly to India’s T20 World Cup triumph and made headlines as the most expensive player in IPL history at the 2025 mega auction.

“Getting back to cricket was one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced,” Pant shared. “That moment of return, after such a long fight, was deeply personal—a victory of belief and hard work. Being nominated for the Laureus Comeback Award is incredibly special and a tribute to my family, the BCCI, doctors, support staff, trainers, and fans who stood by me.”

The Competition

Pant joins an elite shortlist of nominees for the 2025 Comeback of the Year Award:

  • Rebeca Andrade (Brazil, Gymnastics): Overcame multiple ACL injuries to win gold, two silvers, and a bronze at Paris 2024.
  • Lara Gut-Behrami (Switzerland, Alpine Skiing): Claimed the overall World Cup title after a long injury hiatus.
  • Ariarne Titmus (Australia, Swimming): Defended her Olympic 400m freestyle title less than a year after tumor surgery.
  • Caeleb Dressel (USA, Swimming): Returned from a mental health break to secure two relay golds in Paris.
  • Marc Márquez (Spain, MotoGP): Won three Grand Prix races in 2024 after a career-threatening arm injury.

The Laureus Process and Ceremony

Nominees for the 2025 Laureus Awards were selected through a global vote by sports media, with the final decision resting with the 69-member Laureus World Sports Academy—comprising sporting legends. The winners will be unveiled at the 25th anniversary ceremony on April 21, 2025, in Madrid, Spain. This milestone event will celebrate the standout achievements of 2024 and reflect on 25 years of unforgettable sporting moments since the awards began.

India’s javelin star Neeraj Chopra was previously nominated for the Breakthrough of the Year in 2022, highlighting the country’s growing presence on the Laureus stage.

Why Pant’s Nomination Stands Out

Pant’s journey transcends cricket—it’s a story of survival, grit, and triumph against all odds. From the brink of losing his career to lifting a World Cup trophy, his comeback embodies the spirit of the Laureus Award. As the Madrid ceremony approaches, Pant’s nomination not only honors his personal victory but also inspires athletes and fans worldwide.

Will Rishabh Pant join the elite list of Laureus winners? The world awaits the verdict on April 21.
