CHANDIGARH, March 15:
In a relentless push against the drug menace under the ongoing campaign “Yudh Nashian Virudh” (War Against Drugs), Punjab Police conducted raids at 557 locations on Saturday, marking the 15th consecutive day of intensified action. The operation led to the arrest of 114 drug smugglers, with 72 first information reports (FIRs) registered across the state. With this latest crackdown, the total number of drug smugglers arrested in just 15 days has surged to 1,936.
The raids yielded significant recoveries, including 945 grams of heroin, 43 kilograms of poppy husk, 3,098 intoxicant tablets/pills/injections, and ₹76,310 in drug money from the possession of those apprehended.
The operation was carried out under the directives of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, and spanned all 28 police districts of the state simultaneously.
Notably, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has tasked Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners, and Senior Superintendents of Police with making Punjab a drug-free state within the next three months. To oversee this mission, the Punjab government has formed a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, headed by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to monitor progress in the fight against drugs.

Providing further details, Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla stated that over 250 police teams, comprising more than 1,600 personnel, conducted the raids under the supervision of 103 gazetted officers. During the day-long operation, the teams scrutinized 592 suspicious individuals across the state.
Shukla highlighted the state government’s three-pronged strategy — Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP) — aimed at eradicating the drug menace. As part of the ‘De-addiction’ initiative, Punjab Police successfully convinced two individuals to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment. Additionally, as part of the ‘Prevention’ drive, 127 awareness events were organized statewide to educate the public about the dangers of drug abuse.
This comprehensive approach underscores Punjab Police’s commitment to not only cracking down on drug smuggling but also addressing the root causes of addiction and fostering a drug-free society.
