Punjab Government Launches New Scheme for Working Women: Six Hostels to Be Built, Announces Dr. Baljit Kaur

CM Bhagwant Mann’s Administration Prioritizes Women’s Empowerment

Chandigarh, March 28

The Punjab Government is taking bold steps to support working women by creating a safe and comfortable environment for them. In a groundbreaking move, the state will construct six Working Women Hostels for the first time in its history. This announcement was made by Dr. Baljit Kaur, Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development, during a session in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Friday, in response to a query from MLA Kulwant Singh.

Dr. Baljit Kaur revealed that these hostels will be established across Mohali, Jalandhar, Amritsar, and Bathinda districts. Mohali will house three of these facilities, while Jalandhar, Amritsar, and Bathinda will each get one. With an estimated cost of ₹150 crore, the project aims to provide accommodation for approximately 800 working women, addressing a critical need for secure housing

The minister outlined the timeline, stating that construction is slated to begin in May 2025 and is expected to be completed by March 31, 2026.

Dr. Kaur emphasized that the Punjab Government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s leadership, is steadfastly committed to women’s welfare and empowerment. “This initiative reflects our dedication to ensuring women can live safely and independently while pursuing their careers,” she said, adding that the government is continuously introducing measures to uplift and empower women across the state.
