Orange Cap Legacy
Since the IPL’s inception in 2008, the Orange Cap has been won by some of cricket’s greatest batters.
The inaugural winner, Shaun Marsh, scored 616 runs for Kings XI Punjab. Over the years, icons like Chris Gayle, David Warner, and Virat Kohli have added their names to the prestigious list.
Virat Kohli’s 973-run haul in IPL 2016, including four centuries for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, stands as the most iconic Orange Cap performance. It remains the highest single-season tally in IPL history and the only time a batter has crossed 900 runs. Shubman Gill’s 890 runs in IPL 2023 is the closest anyone has come.
Chris Gayle, the ‘Universe Boss,’ is the only player to win the Orange Cap in back-to-back seasons (2011 and 2012). David Warner holds the record for the most Orange Cap titles, triumphing three times (2015, 2017, 2019).
Last season, Virat Kohli reclaimed the crown with 741 runs in 15 matches, joining Warner and Gayle as a multiple-time winner.
Only two players—Robin Uthappa (2014, Kolkata Knight Riders) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (2021, Chennai Super Kings)—have achieved the rare feat of winning both the Orange Cap and the IPL title in the same year.
Across 17 completed IPL seasons, Indian batters have claimed the Orange Cap seven times, while Australians have done so on six occasions. Sachin Tendulkar became the first Indian winner in 2010, following Australians Shaun Marsh and Matthew Hayden in the first two editions.
