The Punjab Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, on Friday approved the procurement of anti-drone systems to prevent the smuggling of weapons and drugs via drones along the state’s border with Pakistan.
The decision was finalized during a meeting of the Council of Ministers at the Chief Minister’s official residence.
A spokesperson from the Chief Minister’s Office announced that nine anti-drone systems will be deployed along the 532-kilometer border with Pakistan. These systems aim to curb the smuggling of drugs and weapons facilitated by drones. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that the state government will invest ₹51.41 crore in this critical initiative to enhance border security.
Punjab, sharing a significant international border with Pakistan and situated near Afghanistan—a major heroin-producing region—faces ongoing attempts by Pakistan to destabilize India’s internal security through cross-border smuggling. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones has enabled breaches in border fencing.
The deployment of Anti-Drone Systems (ADS) is essential to detect and neutralize hostile drones, preventing the influx of arms, explosives, and narcotics smuggled across the border. Additionally, these systems are vital for ensuring security during the movement of VIPs and highly threatened individuals in the state. Recognizing the urgency, the Punjab government has prioritized the installation of Anti-Drone Systems in the state’s border districts.
