Enhanced Security Measures in Punjab Jails
In a significant move, the Mann-led Punjab Government has decided to bolster security in the state’s jails by installing advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based cameras. This initiative will enable 24/7 monitoring to curb illegal activities, including the use of drugs and mobile phones, within jail premises.
Surprise Inspections by Jail Minister
Punjab Jail Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar conducted surprise inspections of the Central Jails in Rupnagar and Kapurthala on May 16, 2025. He stated that the Punjab Government is taking strict measures to prevent the illegal use of mobile phones and the nefarious activities of criminal elements in jails. The state’s jails are being equipped with the latest security technology to ensure robust safety measures.
Strict Directives to Jail Staff
Bhullar issued firm instructions to jail officials and staff to perform their duties with utmost diligence. He warned that any government employee or inmate found involved in drug use or supply within the jail would face severe action. Emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy, he directed officials to completely eliminate drugs, mobile phones, and other objectionable items from jails, stating that negligence in duty would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Commitment to Eradicate Criminal Activities
Reiterating the government’s commitment to eradicating criminal activities in jails, Bhullar announced that jammers will soon be installed across all Punjab jails. The process is being finalized following approval from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. He clarified that strict action would be taken against any official or employee involved in illegal activities, citing recent actions against erring officials in Sangrur Jail as an example. Bhullar urged the entire jail staff to fulfill their responsibilities with honesty and dedication.
Focus on Rehabilitation and Reform
The minister highlighted that under Chief Minister Mann’s leadership, the Punjab Government is continuously working to reform inmates and reintegrate them into society as constructive citizens. During his visit, Bhullar thoroughly inspected the jails, listened to the inmates’ concerns, and gathered detailed information about healthcare facilities at the jail hospital and the quality of food provided.
Addressing Inmate Concerns
Bhullar also heard the grievances of female inmates and others during his visit. He inspected items produced at the Kapurthala Jail factory and inaugurated a sports stadium constructed within the jail premises, reflecting efforts to improve facilities for inmates.
A Step Toward Safer Jails
The installation of AI-based cameras and other security measures underscores the Punjab Government’s commitment to enhancing jail safety and ensuring a rehabilitative environment for inmates. These steps aim to create a secure and disciplined system while supporting the reformation of prisoners.
