200 Women Join Amritsar’s E-Auto Fleet Since March 2024

Punjab’s Local Government Minister, Dr. Ravjot Singh, announced today that the state government will soon introduce 447 electric buses in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala, and SAS Nagar (Mohali), supported by modern charging infrastructure to enhance clean public transportation.
Speaking at the “Punjab Conclave on E-Mobility and Sustainable Public Transportation” held in Chandigarh, Dr. Ravjot Singh highlighted that early next year will mark a significant shift toward sustainable public transport in Punjab. He emphasized that the state’s major cities are vital for economic growth, and their sustainable development is a key priority. Transitioning from diesel to electric autos not only reduces pollution but also boosts driver incomes and empowers women, with 200 women having joined Amritsar’s e-auto fleet since March 2024.

The conclave, organized by the Centre for Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW) in collaboration with the Punjab Government on World EV Day, saw Dr. Ravjot Singh noting the encouraging rise in electric auto adoption in Amritsar. The event brought together policymakers, city leaders, experts, and e-auto drivers from Amritsar to discuss and advance clean and equitable mobility solutions.
In his inaugural address, Kulwant Singh, Director of the Department of Local Government, Punjab, stated, “Punjab’s vision for a prosperous and sustainable future is inclusive. The successful conversion of 1,200 diesel autos to electric in Amritsar reflects our commitment to focused policy and community engagement. Building on this, we are now accelerating the rollout of electric buses across major cities like Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and SAS Nagar (Mohali). The Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC), in close coordination with the government, is meticulously planning route rationalization, charging infrastructure, and modernization. With precision, pace, and passion, we are committed to overcoming challenges and advancing Punjab’s clean mobility agenda.”
