In a landmark move to strengthen Punjab’s healthcare system and celebrate the dedication of medical professionals, the Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has launched a first-of-its-kind Policy to Honour Doctors for Outstanding Service, announced Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh on Wednesday.
This transparent, merit-based initiative, implemented by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, will see Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann personally presenting awards at an annual state-level ceremony, underscoring the state’s commitment to recognizing doctors as the cornerstone of Punjab’s healthcare services.
Key Highlights of the Policy
Dr. Balbir Singh, speaking at a press conference, outlined that the policy will honor 60 doctors annually across four categories to boost their morale and dedication to humanitarian service:

District Level Excellence Award

Special Recognition for Innovation or Public Health Leadership

Special Recognition for Public Service in the Private Sector
Each awardee will receive a Certificate of Honour, presented by the Chief Minister or Health Minister, and a permanent listing on the State Health Honour Board, which will be maintained digitally and prominently displayed in government hospitals.
Dr. Balbir Singh stated, “Doctors are the guardians of public health, standing as pillars of strength during crises like COVID-19 and floods. This policy reflects our government’s commitment to celebrating their service and inspiring continued dedication and compassion.”

Strengthening Punjab’s Healthcare Workforce
Currently, approximately 6,000 doctors serve across Aam Aadmi Clinics, Rural and Urban Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, Sub-Divisional and District Hospitals, Government Medical Colleges, and outreach programs, ensuring quality healthcare reaches even the most remote areas of Punjab.
Since 2022, the Punjab Government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has recruited 934 doctors, accounting for nearly 25% of the state’s current 3,831 Medical Officers and Specialists deployed across various healthcare facilities. Dr. Balbir Singh confirmed that recruitment efforts continue, with additional doctors expected to join within the next one to two months.
Doctors’ Role in Healthcare Delivery
Punjab’s doctors play a critical role in delivering healthcare, managing outpatient and inpatient services, surgeries, emergencies, and leading preventive programs such as immunization, maternal and child health, and disease control. They also contribute to medical research, training, and innovations that are transforming the state’s healthcare system.
Recognition for Other Healthcare Workers
Dr. Balbir Singh announced that, following a similar model, frontline health workers, including ASHA workers, nurses, and other staff, will also be felicitated for their contributions.
