Chandigarh, July 14, 2026:
Continuing its crackdown on corruption across the state, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Kamaljit Singh, posted at the Women’s Police Station, Police Lines, Sangrur, while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹7,000.
According to an official spokesperson, the arrest was made following a complaint filed by a resident of Bhawanigarh in Sangrur district.
The complainant stated that he was involved in a matrimonial dispute, after which his wife began living separately and later lodged a complaint against him, his father, and his brother at the Women’s Police Station in Sangrur. The case was being investigated by ASI Kamaljit Singh.
During the investigation, the accused ASI allegedly demanded ₹10,000 as a bribe for presenting the challan of the registered case before the competent court.
The spokesperson further revealed that the complainant had already paid ₹3,000 as the first installment and was asked to pay the remaining ₹7,000 later.

Refusing to pay the balance amount, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau’s Patiala Range and lodged a complaint.
After verifying the allegations, the Vigilance Bureau laid a trap and caught the accused ASI red-handed while accepting the remaining ₹7,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau Police Station, Patiala. Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
