Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University (JGND PSOU), Patiala, officially commenced its first academic session at its newly established campus at Mohindra Kothi near Fountain Chowk with a solemn prayer ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the university’s journey. The inaugural event was attended by Vice-Chancellors of leading universities across Punjab and distinguished American jurist and philanthropist S. Jaspreet Singh Attorney, adding to the historic importance of the occasion.
Welcoming the dignitaries, Prof. (Dr.) Rattan Singh, Vice-Chancellor of JGND PSOU, said the university is uniquely positioned to provide quality higher education across every region of Punjab through its open and distance learning model. He emphasized the university’s commitment to making education accessible to learners from all sections of society.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Karamjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and the founding Vice-Chancellor of JGND PSOU, highlighted the growing importance of open and online education. He noted that the future of higher education lies in flexible learning systems that enable students to pursue education without geographical or time constraints.
Chief Guest S. Jaspreet Singh Attorney expressed the Punjabi diaspora’s deep concern for the welfare of Punjab and reiterated the willingness of Non-Resident Punjabis to collaborate with educational institutions in supporting the education and future of the state’s youth.

Prof. (Dr.) Jagdeep Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala, appreciated the dedication and leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Rattan Singh in strengthening the university and congratulated him on the launch of the new campus. Prof. (Dr.) Pushpinder Singh Gill, Vice-Chancellor of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University, assured continued cooperation and support for JGND PSOU’s future initiatives. Meanwhile, Prof. (Dr.) Jai Shankar Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala, praised the university’s academic growth, especially the introduction of law-related programmes in the current academic session.
In a remarkable philanthropic initiative, Prof. (Dr.) Sarbjinder Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Sunny Oberoi Vivek Sadan Futuristic University, Sri Anandpur Sahib, announced that his university would sponsor the complete educational expenses of 100 economically disadvantaged students enrolling at JGND PSOU.
The ceremony was attended by the families of the visiting Vice-Chancellors, international delegates, faculty members, and senior university officials, including Dr. Kuldeep Walia (Director, CIQA), Dr. Amitoj Singh (Associate Dean, Academic Affairs), Dr. Navleen Multani (Associate Dean, Research), Dr. Sulakshana (Associate Dean, Student Welfare), and Dr. Sukhdev Singh (Public Relations Officer). The event reflected the university’s vision of expanding quality higher education through innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration.
