Chandigarh, July 29
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), as part of its ongoing anti-corruption campaign across the state, has arrested a clerk posted at the Block Primary Education Office (BPEO), Hajipur, in Hoshiarpur district, while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹10,000.
According to an official spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau, the accused, identified as Gagan, was arrested following a complaint filed by a resident of Sultanpur village in Malerkotla district.
The complainant stated that he had visited the BPEO Office in Hajipur to process Child Care Leave for his wife, an ETT teacher serving at Government Elementary School, Sahora village, Block Hajipur, Hoshiarpur district.
During the visit, the accused clerk allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹10,000 over the phone in exchange for approving the leave application. The complainant recorded the conversation in which the bribe was allegedly demanded.

Refusing to pay the illegal gratification, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau’s Jalandhar Range. Acting swiftly on the complaint, the VB team laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while accepting the ₹10,000 bribe in the presence of two official witnesses. The tainted currency notes were recovered from his possession.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau Police Station, Jalandhar. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
