The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Nippon Sport Science University (NSSU), Japan, and Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), Patiala, organised a Faculty and Coach Development Workshop titled “Experiencing and Designing Learner-Centred Coach Development” to strengthen India’s coach education system.
Led by Dr. Masamitsu Ito, Professor at NSSU and Director of the NSSU Coach Developer Academy, the workshop brought together faculty members and coach educators to promote modern, learner-centred approaches to coach development.
The workshop focused on moving beyond traditional lecture-based teaching towards active learning driven by dialogue, reflection and collaboration. It aimed to enhance instructional skills, strengthen coach education and promote sustainable human resource development in the sports sector.
The programme covered key areas including effective communication, learning design, facilitation, peer learning, feedback and reflective practice. Participants progressed from personal learning experiences to designing and facilitating learning activities, and also prepared action plans to improve their own faculty practices.

Vineet Kumar, Deputy Director General, NSNIS Patiala, said, “This workshop was highly beneficial for our coaches, with more than 29 coaches participating. It provided valuable exposure to learner-centred coaching, active learning, effective communication, learning design, facilitation, peer learning, feedback and reflective practice.”
Dr. Masamitsu Ito said, “When coach educators experience learning as coaches themselves, they are better able to support the learning of others. Our aim is to nurture a culture of learner-centred coach development.”
Takuro Takeuchi, Chief Representative, JICA India Office, said, “Sport is an extremely powerful tool for social and performance change. JICA is delighted to work with NSNIS Patiala and NSSU to strengthen India’s coach education system and promote lifelong learning.”
The initiative is expected to provide a strong foundation for future collaboration in curriculum development, faculty capacity building and continued professional engagement, further contributing to the development of India’s coach education ecosystem.
