India has achieved another significant milestone in its space programme with the successful launch of the GSLV-F17 carrying the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite. The mission further strengthens India’s capabilities in space-based Earth observation and marks the 19th flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).
The GSLV-F17 lifted off from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 2:55 am IST on Friday and successfully placed EOS-05 into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO). The satellite is expected to use its onboard propulsion system to reach its designated operational orbit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the successful mission as another major achievement for ISRO and described it as a proud moment for the nation.

EOS-05: A New Capability in Earth Observation
According to ISRO, EOS-05 is a state-of-the-art Earth observation spacecraft and India’s first imaging satellite designed to operate from a geosynchronous orbit. From this orbit, the satellite will be capable of repeatedly observing large geographical areas, offering valuable data for various Earth observation applications.
The satellite’s high-frequency observation capability is expected to have applications in areas such as agriculture, forestry, water-resource monitoring and disaster management. Frequent observations could also assist authorities in tracking major weather-related and natural events.
Boost to India’s GSLV Programme
The successful mission is also an important achievement for India’s GSLV programme. ISRO has confirmed that GSLV-F17 is the 19th flight of the GSLV, demonstrating the launcher’s continued role in placing heavier spacecraft into higher orbits.
The EOS-05 mission adds another important capability to India’s growing fleet of Earth observation satellites. Once operational, its geosynchronous imaging capability is expected to provide frequent observations of large regions, supporting planning, resource management and disaster-response efforts.
A Significant Step for India’s Space Programme
The successful deployment of EOS-05 represents more than another successful launch for ISRO. It marks an important advancement in India’s efforts to develop indigenous, high-end Earth observation capabilities and expand the use of satellite data for national applications.
ISRO has officially listed EOS-05 as launched on September 4, 2026, with GSLV-F17 successfully accomplishing its mission.
