Advance Your Education: New Training at Malaviya Mission

Under the visionary leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Jagdeep Singh, Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University the UGC–Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre (MMTTC), Punjabi University, Patiala, has commenced its Refresher Course in “Languages, Literature & Cultural Studies” and the Short-Term Course in “MOOCs, Online Courses and Open Educational Resources” in the offline mode. These programmes have attracted a diverse group of academicians from various parts of the country.

The Refresher Course aims to provide an in-depth academic exploration of linguistic, literary, and cultural traditions. It is structured to enhance participants’ understanding of language structures, literary theories, cultural narratives, and interpretative methodologies. The course further seeks to develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and interdisciplinary perspectives essential for research and teaching in languages, literature, and cultural studies.

The Short-Term Course on MOOCs, Online Courses, and Open Educational Resources introduces participants to emerging digital learning ecosystems and global trends in technology-driven education. Delivered in an online mode, this programme offers comprehensive insights into the conceptualization, development, and practical application of MOOCs and related online learning platforms, equipping educators with contemporary pedagogical tools.

During the inaugural session, Prof. (Dr.) Raman Maini, Director, MMTTC and Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Punjabi University, Patiala, extended a cordial welcome to the Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) Jagdeep Singh, Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala; the Guest of Honour, Prof. (Dr.) Harmohinder Singh Bedi, Chancellor, Central University of Himachal Pradesh; the Course Coordinator of the Refresher Course, Dr. Pushpinder Joshi, Associate Professor, Department of Sanskrit & Pali; the Co-coordinator, Dr. C. P. Kamboj, Assistant Professor, Department of Linguistics and Punjabi Lexicography; the Course Coordinator of the Short-Term Course, Mr. Daljit Ami, Director, Educational Multimedia Research Centre; and all participating scholars.

Dr. Maini expressed profound gratitude to the  Vice Chancellor for his unwavering encouragement and steadfast support of the academic initiatives undertaken by UGC–MMTTC. He acknowledged that Prof. Singh’s visionary leadership and academic commitment have been instrumental in driving growth, innovation, and excellence in faculty development programmes at the Centre.

Dr. Maini also extended heartfelt appreciation to Prof. (Dr.) Harmohinder Singh Bedi for gracing the occasion as Guest of Honour. He remarked that Prof. Bedi’s insightful observations and dedication to enriching knowledge in languages, literature, and cultural heritage significantly elevated the inaugural session. His presence and guidance provided invaluable inspiration to all participants.

He further commended the Course Coordinators and Co-coordinators for their meticulous planning, academic insight, and tireless efforts in shaping these programmes into meaningful and impactful learning experiences. Their dedication has ensured the smooth and successful commencement of both courses.

Dr. Maini emphasized that the sessions will be delivered by eminent resource persons from reputed institutions, guaranteeing enriching and high-quality academic exposure. He highlighted that both programmes are carefully designed in accordance with UGC–MMTTC guidelines and reflect Punjabi University’s commitment to academic excellence, professional development, and the integration of contemporary pedagogical frameworks.

In his address, the Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) Jagdeep Singh, expressed appreciation for the organisers’ efforts in conceptualizing and conducting these programmes. He noted that the study of languages and literature offers profound insights into human creativity, thought processes, and cultural evolution. Emphasizing the significance of digital tools in modern pedagogy, he observed that MOOCs and Open Educational Resources have the potential to expand academic outreach, enhance learner engagement, and redefine educational accessibility. He lauded MMTTC’s initiatives aimed at strengthening professional competencies in these critical academic domains.

Guest of Honour Prof. (Dr.) Harmohinder Singh Bedi highlighted the integral role that languages, literature, and cultural studies play in shaping intellectual discourse and fostering cultural sensitivity. He noted that, in today’s interconnected world, understanding linguistic diversity and cultural narratives is essential for building inclusive and informed societies. He also underscored the transformative impact of MOOCs and OERs in democratizing knowledge and enriching academic ecosystems, and commended MMTTC for organizing such forward-looking programmes.

Dr. Pushpinder Joshi, Course Coordinator of the Refresher Course, elaborated that the programme offers a comprehensive platform for faculty and researchers to deepen their engagement with linguistic theories, cultural criticism, comparative literature, translation studies, and interdisciplinary scholarship. He noted that the course aims to strengthen participants’ interpretative capacities and expand their understanding of how language and culture shape human experience and social identity.

Mr. Daljit Ami, Coordinator of the Short-Term Course, outlined its objectives and relevance, emphasizing the importance of instructional design, learner engagement, and assessment strategies tailored to digital environments. Through hands-on activities and interactive sessions, the course aims to empower participants to effectively create, curate, and utilize digital learning resources.

Course Co-coordinator Dr. C. P. Kamboj introduced the thematic components of the Refresher Course, highlighting how its lectures, discussions, and reflective engagements are structured to foster analytical and interpretative competencies. He noted that the programme will equip participants with advanced academic skills essential for teaching, research, and critical scholarship.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Maini extended sincere appreciation to the dedicated staff—Dr. Mandeep Singh (Technical Officer-II), Mr. Dyal Dutt, Mr. Surinder Singh, Mrs. Kanta Rani, Mr. Mahaveer Singh, and Mr. Surinder Kumar—for their exemplary commitment and organizational support, which contributed significantly to the successful initiation of both programmes.
