BCCI Permits Cricketers’ Families at ICC Champions Trophy Under One Key Condition

Patiala, 21 February (Sports Desk)

In a significant move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has allowed Indian cricketers, including stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma , to have their families accompany them during the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai. This decision marks a shift from the board’s earlier stance, which had imposed strict guidelines following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy , limiting family involvement during tours.

However, the BCCI’s permission comes with a notable condition: players can only have their families join them for one match during the tournament. The players are required to coordinate among themselves and submit a collective request to the BCCI, which will then manage the logistics for the visit.

Previously, the BCCI had permitted families to travel with players only during long overseas tours exceeding 45 days, allowing a limited two-week window. For shorter tournaments like the Champions Trophy , family accompaniment was not allowed. However, recognizing the unique nature of this event, the board has made an exception, granting players the opportunity to have their loved ones present for one game. It remains unclear which match the players have chosen for this allowance.

The BCCI stressed that the revised policy aims to strike a balance between player welfare and maintaining professional standards and operational efficiency during international assignments. By allowing families for a single match, the board seeks to support the players emotionally while ensuring minimal disruption to team dynamics and performance.

This decision reflects the board’s effort to address player concerns while upholding the integrity and focus required for high-stakes tournaments like the ICC Champions Trophy.
