USA/Patiala, 16 February (Sports Desk)

Indian middle-distance runner Gulveer Singh etched his name in the record books by shattering the national record in the men’s 3000m at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational 2025 in Massachusetts, USA, on Friday.

Competing at the Boston University Track and Tennis Centre , the 26-year-old Asian Games medallist clocked an impressive time of 7:38.26 , finishing second in a highly competitive field. Gulveer’s performance broke the previous national record of 7:49.47 , set by Surendra Singh in 2008, by over 11 seconds . His effort also surpassed India’s outdoor 3000m national record of 7:50.31 , which Surendra Singh achieved in England the same year.

A Historic Achievement

Gulveer’s remarkable feat marks a significant milestone in Indian athletics. The new record is now subject to ratification by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) .

The race saw fierce competition, with Romain Legendre of France taking the top spot with a time of 7:36.28 . The USA’s Morgan Beadlescomb finished third in 7:38.55 , narrowly behind Gulveer. Meanwhile, India’s Rahul finished in 8:08.27 , securing the 112th position in a field of over 200 athletes across 13 heats.

The current indoor 3000m world record stands at 7:22.91 , held by the USA’s Grant Fisher , who achieved the mark earlier this month in New York. Grant, a Paris 2024 bronze medallist, remains one of the standout names in global distance running.
