Hitesh Gulia Strikes Gold as India Secures Six Medals at World Boxing Cup Brazil 2025

Brazil/Patiala, 06 April (Shahi)
India concluded its campaign at the World Boxing Cup Brazil 2025 in Foz do Iguacu on Saturday with an impressive haul of six medals: one gold, one silver, and four bronze. Leading the charge was Hitesh Gulia, who etched his name in history as the first Indian to win a World Boxing Cup gold. Competing in the men’s 70kg category, Hitesh secured the top prize via a walkover after his opponent, England’s Odel Kamara, withdrew due to injury.
Abhinash Jamwal also reached the final in the men’s 65kg division, delivering a spirited performance against local favorite Yuri Reis. Despite his efforts, Jamwal settled for silver. Meanwhile, four other Indian boxers—Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (50kg), Manish Rathore (55kg), Sachin (60kg), and Vishal (90kg)—claimed bronze medals after bowing out in the semi-finals. Consistent with Olympic boxing tradition, both losing semi-finalists at the Brazil event were awarded bronze.
Reflecting on his triumph, Hitesh Gulia credited a 10-day training camp in Brazil for sharpening his skills. “The camp taught me tactical nuances that made a big difference in the competition. This tournament offered incredible exposure at the highest level, and I’m thrilled to have won gold,” he said.

The event, the first of three World Boxing Cups in 2025, saw over 130 boxers, including Olympians from 19 countries, compete. While both men’s and women’s categories were contested, India fielded athletes only in the 10 men’s weight classes, as the women’s senior nationals overlapped earlier this month. Upcoming legs in Kazakhstan (June-July) and India (November) will offer further ranking points, with top performers advancing to the season-ending World Boxing Cup Finals.
