India Wins 33 Medals at Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships 2024

India concluded its successful campaign at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships 2024 in Doha, Qatar, with an impressive haul of 33 medals. The competition, featuring 20 categories each for junior (ages 15-20) and youth (ages 13-17) lifters, awarded medals for snatch, clean and jerk, and overall totals.

Indian youth lifters dominated, securing 21 medals, including a clean sweep of all seven gold medals. Junior lifters added another 12 medals to the total.

Key Highlights:

  • Jyoshna Sabar’s Dominance: 16-year-old Jyoshna Sabar (Uttar Pradesh) shone on the opening day, winning three gold medals in the women’s youth 40kg category with a total lift of 135kg (60kg snatch + 75kg clean and jerk), setting a new Asian record in the total.
  • Payal and Sanjana’s Multiple Medals: Payal (women’s 45kg) and Sanjana (women’s 76kg) each won five medals across both junior and youth divisions. Payal secured gold in the youth total and snatch, and bronze in the youth clean and jerk, along with bronze medals in the junior total and clean and jerk. Sanjana, 17, lifted a personal best of 230kg (90kg snatch + 120kg clean and jerk) to win five silver medals, narrowly missing out on gold in the junior snatch.
  • Other Notable Performances: Koyel Bar (women’s youth 55kg) and Sairaj Pardeshi (men’s youth 81kg) also won gold medals. Nilam Devi claimed three silver medals in the women’s junior 55kg category. Maibam Martina Devi earned two silvers (total and clean and jerk) and a bronze (snatch) in the women’s junior +87kg division on the final day.
  • Dhanush Loganathan: Dhanush Loganathan, India’s sole medalist at the IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships this year, missed out on a medal in the men’s junior 55kg category.

This year’s performance, while impressive, was slightly lower than last year’s haul of 42 medals at the championships held in Greater Noida.
