India’s Star Batter Opts for County Cricket in England After Missing Test Team Spot

Indian young batter Tilak Varma, who has played 4 ODIs and 25 T20Is for India, has decided to feature in the County Championship with Hampshire after missing out on a spot in the Test team. The Hyderabad Cricket Association confirmed his participation on Wednesday, June 11.

According to a report, Tilak will be available for two months and is expected to play in four four-day matches. However, his availability for ODIs remains uncertain. The Hyderabad Cricket Association stated in a release, “We are delighted to announce that Hampshire County has approached Hyderabad’s international player Shri N. Thakur Tilak Varma to play in the UK County Championship League.”

Tilak Varma’s First-Class Record

The left-handed batter, with 1204 runs in 18 first-class matches at an average above 50, including 5 centuries and 4 half-centuries, has shown consistent form. In the recently concluded IPL 2025, he scored 343 runs in 13 innings for Mumbai Indians at an average of 31.18. Earlier, on June 10, Yorkshire signed Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad for the County Championship.
