Purple Cap Legacy

Since its introduction in the inaugural IPL season of 2008, the Purple Cap has been claimed by some of the world’s finest bowlers.

The first recipient was Pakistan’s Sohail Tanvir, who took 22 wickets in 11 matches for Rajasthan Royals in their only title-winning campaign to date. Over the years, legends like Lasith Malinga and Dwayne Bravo have added their names to the list.

Among the standout Purple Cap performances, Dwayne Bravo (2013) and Harshal Patel (2021) share the record for the most wickets in a single season with 32 each. Bravo achieved this in 18 matches for Chennai Super Kings, while Patel matched it in 15 games for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Kagiso Rabada is the only other bowler to breach the 30-wicket mark, claiming 30 scalps in 17 matches for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2020.

Dwayne Bravo, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Harshal Patel are the only bowlers to win the Purple Cap twice. Bravo triumphed with CSK in 2013 and 2015, while Patel won with RCB in 2021 and Punjab Kings in 2024. Bhuvneshwar Kumar stands alone as the only bowler to win it in consecutive seasons, doing so with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 and 2017.

Just three players—Sohail Tanvir (2008, Rajasthan Royals), RP Singh (2009, Deccan Chargers), and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2016, Sunrisers Hyderabad)—have won both the Purple Cap and the IPL trophy in the same year.

Across 17 completed IPL seasons, Indian bowlers have secured the Purple Cap nine times, while South Africans have claimed it on three occasions. RP Singh, a 2007 T20 World Cup winner, was the first Indian to win it, taking 23 wickets in 16 matches for Deccan Chargers in 2009.
