Patiala, 23 April (Shahi)

Since its introduction in 2009, the Super Over has become a thrilling tie-breaker in the Indian Premier League (IPL), deciding the outcome of 15 matches to date. The first-ever IPL Super Over occurred between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2009, setting the stage for this high-stakes format akin to football’s penalty shootout. Replacing the earlier bowl-out method, the Super Over is now a cornerstone of limited-overs cricket.

Super Over Rules

A Super Over is employed when an IPL match ends in a tie, with both teams scoring the same number of runs after their allotted overs. The rules are as follows:

  • Each team nominates three batsmen and one bowler for a six-ball over.
  • The team that scores more runs wins.
  • If two wickets fall, the batting team’s Super Over ends, even if fewer than six balls are bowled.
  • The team that batted second in the main match bats first in the Super Over.
  • If the Super Over is tied, a second Super Over is played, with the team that fielded first in the initial Super Over batting first. New batsmen (not dismissed in the first Super Over) and a different bowler are nominated.
  • A bowler cannot bowl consecutive Super Overs, and a dismissed batsman cannot bat in the subsequent Super Over.

Before 2019, if a Super Over was tied, the team with more boundaries in the match (including the Super Over) was declared the winner. Post-2019, following the controversial boundary countback in the 2019 ODI World Cup final, the rule was amended to allow multiple Super Overs until a winner emerges.

First IPL Super Over: KKR vs RR (2009)

The inaugural IPL Super Over took place in 2009 in Cape Town between KKR and RR. RR posted 150/6, and KKR, needing seven runs in the final over with four wickets in hand, were restricted to 150/8 by Kamran Khan’s tight bowling, resulting in a tie. In the Super Over:

  • KKR scored 15/1, with Chris Gayle (dismissed) and Brendon McCullum batting, bowled by Kamran Khan.
  • RR chased 16 runs in four balls, with Yusuf Pathan smashing 18/0 off Ajantha Mendis to secure victory.

This marked the beginning of the Super Over era in the IPL, with 15 such contests recorded to date.

Notable Highlights

  • 2020 Season: The IPL 2020 season saw a record four Super Over matches, including the historic Double Super Over between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP, now Punjab Kings). Both teams tied at 176/6, scored 5 runs each in the first Super Over, and KXIP won the second Super Over, chasing MI’s 11/1. On the same day, KKR vs SRH also went to a Super Over.
  • KKR vs RR (2014): This match saw a tied Super Over (11/2 vs 11/0), with RR winning via higher boundary count, as multiple Super Overs were not allowed then.
  • Rule Evolution: Pre-2019, tied Super Overs were decided by boundary countback (total boundaries in the match, including/excluding the Super Over). Post-2019, the rule was updated to allow multiple Super Overs, prompted by the 2019 ODI World Cup final controversy.
