SC Community to Gain Greater Representation in AG Office; Cabinet Approves Ordinance

Chandigarh, April 11, 2025:

The Punjab Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwanth Mann, has approved an ordinance to ensure better representation for the Scheduled Caste (SC) community in the contractual appointment of law officers across the state.

This decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister at his official residence today.

A spokesperson from the Chief Minister’s Office stated that the cabinet has greenlit an ordinance to amend the Punjab Law Officers Engagement Act of 2017. The amendment relaxes income criteria for SC community members seeking contractual roles as law officers in the Advocate General’s Office, Punjab, aiming to enhance their representation.

One-Time Relaxation Policy Approved for Improvement Trust Allottees

In another key decision, the cabinet approved a One-Time Relaxation (OTR) policy concerning non-construction fees and outstanding dues for allottees of Improvement Trusts in Punjab. This move will provide significant relief by waiving penal interest for the allottees.

Approval for Reorganization of Administrative Blocks

To improve geographical and administrative efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and legislative alignment, the cabinet has authorized the reorganization and rationalization of existing blocks in Punjab. With 154 blocks currently in the state, this realignment aims to address administrative challenges and ensure smoother governance in the public interest.

Retirement Age for Medical College Doctors and Professors Increased

The cabinet also approved raising the retirement age for doctors and professors in medical colleges under the Medical Education and Research Department from 62 to 65 years. This change will ensure continuity in high-quality medical education, greatly benefiting students.

Need-Based Hiring of Specialized Doctors Post-Retirement Approved

To address the shortage of doctors in government hospitals, the cabinet has allowed the hiring of retiring specialist doctors on a need-based, annual basis. This decision prioritizes public interest by ensuring continued access to specialized medical expertise.
